Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 17 lineup, and South Africa will be the first country on the continent to receive the new devices. Local retailer iStore South Africa confirmed that pre-orders for the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone Air will start on September 12, 2025, with shipments and in-store availability set for September 19, 2025.
This launch signals the start of Apple’s rollout across Africa, with countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt expected to follow in the weeks after South Africa. This makes the region one of the earliest to access the latest iPhone hardware outside the US and Europe.
Pricing Still Under Wraps
At the time of writing, iStore has not shared official South African pricing. That detail is expected when pre-orders go live. Globally, the Apple iPhone 17 Air price starts at $999 in the US, but local taxes and duties usually push the South African launch prices higher.
Trade-In Options for Upgraders
Even without confirmed iPhone 17 Air prices, iStore is already promoting trade-in deals. Customers can trade in up to five devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, PCs, or Android phones, and receive as much as R23,000 back. That value can go straight toward a new iPhone 17 or iPhone Air.
Pre-orders will be available online for both cash and cellular contracts starting Friday. From launch day on September 19, customers will be able to purchase the new iPhones in-store across all 38 iStore branches, through iStore’s website, or via the iStore app. Note that in-store pickup will only be available after the official in-store launch.

Pricing in these regions often comes at a premium compared to South Africa, reflecting higher import duties and local currency fluctuations. For example, the iPhone 17 Air expected price could push above ₦1,000,000 in Nigeria and KSh 200,000 in Kenya, depending on storage.
For buyers outside South Africa, it’s worth waiting for official announcements from local retailers before importing, since warranty support and carrier compatibility can vary.
