⏱️ Key Takeaways!

  • Choice Hotels International is making its African debut with three hotels in Kenya, set to open in 2026, including a luxury safari lodge in the Maasai Mara and two business hotels in Nairobi.
  • The expansion is backed by a master development agreement, targeting at least 15 more properties across sub-Saharan and southern Africa by 2030.
  • Kenya’s booming tourism and hospitality sector, projected to hit $406.63 million in revenue by 2030, is attracting global brands amid rising demand for premium lodging.

American hospitality giant Choice Hotels International is set to enter Africa for the first time, with three new properties in Kenya by 2026. The move signals a major push into the continent’s fast-growing hospitality market, backed by aggressive expansion plans and a bet on Kenya’s thriving tourism sector.

Kenya’s hospitality boom attracts a global player

With nearly 70 years of experience, Choice Hotels is bringing its portfolio to Africa through a partnership with US-based franchisee Aniket Shroff. The company will debut with an Ascend Collection hotel in the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve, alongside a Clarion Hotel and a Quality Inn in Nairobi’s central business district. These openings mark the brand’s first foray into the continent, with ambitions to scale further.

Kenya’s appeal lies in its economic stability, strategic location, and a 35% surge in international arrivals, as noted by Bani Haddad, founder of Dubai-based Aleph Hospitality. The country’s expanding middle class and rising disposable incomes are fueling demand for high-end hospitality, making it a prime target for global brands.

“Entering Africa is an important milestone… and presents a unique opportunity to bring our world-class hospitality to one of the continent’s fastest-growing markets,” said Pat Pacious, President and CEO of Choice Hotels.

A long-term bet on sub-Saharan Africa

Choice Hotels isn’t stopping at Kenya. The company has signed a master development agreement to expand across sub-Saharan and southern Africa, aiming for at least 15 additional properties by 2030. This aligns with Kenya’s projected $406.63 million hotel market revenue by the same year, growing at an annual rate of 5.70%.

The hospitality sector remains a key driver of Kenya’s GDP, contributing significantly to employment and foreign exchange earnings. Industry analysts highlight the country’s strong investment potential, driven by tourism growth and urbanization. Nairobi, in particular, is emerging as a hub for business travelers, while safari destinations like the Maasai Mara attract luxury tourists.

“Kenya’s hospitality market is evolving rapidly, with demand for both business and leisure accommodations rising,” said Haddad. “Global brands are taking notice.”

What this means for Africa’s hotel industry

Choice Hotels’ entry could reshape Africa’s hospitality landscape. The brand’s franchise model may encourage local developers to adopt international standards, raising service quality across the region. Additionally, its focus on mid-scale and upscale segments could fill gaps in markets where affordable luxury is in short supply.

For Kenya, the move validates its position as a regional tourism leader. With major brands like Marriott, Hilton, and Radisson already present, Choice Hotels’ arrival intensifies competition, potentially driving innovation and better guest experiences. The long-term impact may extend beyond Kenya, as the company eyes expansion into neighboring markets like Rwanda, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

The road ahead: Challenges and opportunities

While the outlook is promising, infrastructure gaps and regulatory hurdles remain challenges. However, Kenya’s government has prioritized tourism growth, introducing incentives for hotel investments. For Choice Hotels, success will depend on local partnerships and adapting to African consumer preferences, such as mobile-first booking systems and sustainable tourism practices.

If executed well, this expansion could set a precedent for other global hospitality players eyeing Africa. With the continent’s young, urbanizing population and increasing business travel, the timing may be just right for Choice Hotels to carve out a significant presence.

Why this move matters for African travelers and investors

For African travelers, Choice Hotels’ entry means more options—whether it’s a safari retreat in the Maasai Mara or a business stay in Nairobi. For investors, it signals confidence in the continent’s post-pandemic recovery and long-term growth. The real test, however, will be how well the brand integrates into local markets while maintaining its global standards.

One thing is clear: Africa’s hospitality sector is no longer on the sidelines. With players like Choice Hotels making bold moves, the next decade could see the continent emerge as a global hospitality hotspot—if the right pieces fall into place.
